Martin Kobler: Extremely alarmed by fighting in Tripoli, Calls for Calm

Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Martin Kobler is extremely alarmed by the ongoing clashes in Tripoli which are reported to have claimed a number of lives. He calls on the forces engaged in the violence there to immediately stop fighting and for wisdom to prevail.

"It is completely unacceptable for armed groups to fight to assert their interest and control, particularly in residential areas, terrorizing the population” said Martin Kobler.  “We are in contact with the Parties on the ground to urge an immediate end to this fighting,” he added.

The Special Representative stressed the need to implement the security arrangements of the Libyan Political Agreement to rid Libyan cities of armed groups and restore order and security for the people of Libya.  UNSMIL remains committed to assist the Libyan people to find peaceful solutions to resolve the ongoing
crisis.
