Martin Kobler: Unacceptable to Fight, Particularly in Residential Area to Assert Interests; Urge Parties in Zawiya to Stop Fighting

Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Martin Kobler expressed his concern over the fighting in Zawiya, which is reported to have claimed a number of civilian lives.  Mr. Kobler urged the forces engaged in the violence there to stop fighting immediately.

"I condemn the violence in Zawiya which has already claimed a number of innocent lives.  It is completely unacceptable for armed groups to fight and use heavy weapons to assert their interests and particularly so in a residential, civilian area.

"Killing and injuring civilians through direct or indiscriminate attacks constitute heinous crimes" said Kobler. "Those responsible must be found and brought to justice".

Kobler calls on all Libyan parties involved to step up their effort to find an immediate solution to the fighting and to restore calm and order.
