Press release: 4th Consultative Meeting of Libyan Political Forces Convenes

Tripoli, 22 December 2013 - The fourth consultative meeting of leaders of Libyan political parties and various groups of the General National Congress as well as some independent personalities and others with wide expertise on constitutional matters convened in Tripoli on Saturday 21 December 2013.

As in the three previous meetings, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) facilitated the deliberations.

The meeting focused largely on issues relating to the transitional stage. Various proposals drawn from a number of initiatives presented by Libyan parties, groups and personalities were discussed. Ideas where consensus was possible were elaborated as well as three possible options to be submitted for the consideration of the Roadmap Committee of the General National Congress.

The United Nations did not present any initiative of its own. The UN role is limited to urging the Libyan forces to engage in dialogue and convening such dialogue at the request of those concerned.

To avoid any ambiguity or insinuation, UNSMIL affirms what is clear to all the participants: that its role does not exceed contributing to a meaningful effort to reach a national consensus among Libyan forces that their country needs in the present circumstances.
