SRSG Abdoulaye Bathily's Statement on Eid al-Adha

On behalf of the United Nations family in Libya, I extend my warmest wishes to the Libyan people on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

Eid is a time of sacrifice and of coming together. It is my hope that these two values can be a guide for Libyan leaders and those in positions of power to take the courageous steps that are urgently needed for a stable, united and prosperous future for Libya. The status quo is untenable. The Libyan people have waited too long to see their country reunited, to exercise their right to choose their leaders and representatives, and to see legitimate State institutions running the country.

We have reached a defining stage on the path to elections. As the “6+6” Committee of the House of Representatives and High State Council has completed its work to prepare draft laws for presidential and parliamentary elections, this is an opportunity that must not be lost. I call on Libya’s leaders, through wisdom, compromise and statesmanship, to reach resolutions that are acceptable to all on those aspects of the draft laws that remain contentious. Hasty and non-inclusive decisions can deepen the prevailing crisis and trigger violence, which must be avoided at all costs.

I remain committed to exercising my role and good offices to facilitate dialogue among the stakeholders in pursuit of Libyan-Libyan solutions to holding successful national elections which are an indispensable step on the path to national reconciliation and rebuilding a united, stable and prosperous Libya for all its people.

Eid Mubarak.
