Towards a Calm and Objective Dialogue in Support of Libya’s Political Process

Tripoli, 10 June 2014 – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for a broad-based dialogue among all Libyan stakeholders to be held next week in Libya. The meeting aims at allowing the opportunity for a peaceful and objective dialogue leading to agreements that support the political process, create a positive atmosphere ahead of the upcoming elections and emphasize the importance of full respect for its outcome.

This meeting follows a series of extensive consultations between UNSMIL and Libyan stakeholders and political actors. Many Libyans have positively welcomed this initiative. The Mission emphasizes that the outcome of the meeting will be a summary of what the participants agree to. It is worth noting that some papers that are circulating are initial drafts resulting from preliminary consultations, and that these are subject to change based on the views of the participants. It is common for this type of procedure involving initial drafts to be part of the preparations for such meetings.

Dialogue is a Libyan demand. No one can impose any predetermined opinions or attitudes on a dialogue among a diverse group of political and civil actors as well as patriotic figures working together in the interest of the Libyan people.

UNSMIL, as always, is committed to impartiality and objectivity in all its activities and events, in line with its Security Council mandate. The Mission is looking forward to the success of this meeting, given its great significance to the democratic transition and to the building of a state of institutions based on the rule of law.
