UN Welcomes Abu- Selim Ceasefire Agreement, Calls for Implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) deplores the outbreak of violence in Abu-Selim, Tripoli that resulted in many casualties. The Mission commends the Presidency Council and community leaders’ efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and prevent further escalation. The terms of the agreement must be implemented immediately, and those responsible for acts of violence must be held accountable.
“My sincere sympathies to all those affected by the violence, especially the families of the victims and the injured” said Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of UNSMIL. “This incident once again demonstrates the need for a swift political solution, including a united Libyan army, operating under civilian control, to provide security for all Libyans. I call for the speedy activation of police and security forces to protect Libyans from crime and lawlessness,” he added.
The Special Representative expresses his full support to the Presidency Council as the sole legitimate executive authority in Libya and calls for renewed efforts towards the implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement. This is in line with the Security Council resolutions on Libya.
The United Nations and the international community remain committed to assist the Libyan people to find solutions to their differences and to support all Libyan endeavors to ensure unity, stability and peace. The men, women and children of Libya deserve a life of peace and prosperity.
