UNESCO trains Libyan artists, youth and cultural institutions in creativity and cultural awareness

Hammamet, Tunisia, 9 December 2014 - UNESCO and the Libyan Department of Antiquities have jointly organized a creativity and cultural awareness workshop for youth and adult working with the Department of Antiquities (DoA), national NGOs and Libyan cultural associations, with the view to develop extra-curricular education activities that foster awareness on cultural heritage protection, as well as to promote cultural healing activities, especially for displaced children and youth who with their families have been forced to leave their homes.

During 7-13 December, over 20 trainees will be coached on storytelling techniques, including theatre, music and singing, in addition to collective writing as well as basics of arts management and arts education. The trainers are flanked by a professional filmmaker, to coach the staff from DoA media section in producing quality and innovative video clips. The outcomes of this first workshop, as well as subsequent sessions, will serve to start the mapping intangible cultural heritage in Libya in selected communities. The training is undertaken within a wider programme to protect Libya’s cultural heritage generously financed by the Government of Italy.
