United Nations Urges Libyans to Participate in Constitution-Drafting Assembly Elections
Tripoli, 20 February 2014 - On the occasion of the elections to the Constitution-Drafting Assembly, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Tarek Mitri expressed hope that Libyans will participate in the crucial constitution-making process, set in motion by these elections.
“Today, Libyans go to the polls for their second elections since the revolution. All of us are aware that in a transition, a second election may not motivate people and mobilise energies in the same way the first elections did. But we call on Libyans not to underestimate the importance of these elections.” he said.
Addressing the Libyan voters, Mr. Mitri added: “These elections, coming three days after the anniversary of the revolution for which you sacrificed so much for, are your opportunity to make your voice heard and contribute to your new State’s constitution. I trust that all who can will participate today in a peaceful and mindful manner.”
