United Nations Mine Action Services Celebrates Completion of Non-Technical Survey Course Programme for Libyans working in Humanitarian Mine Action, Emergency Response

Tunis, Tunisia: The United Nations Mine Actions Service (UNMAS) and Arms and Ammunition Advisory Section (AAAS) of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) have celebrated the successful graduation of 15 Libyan participants including a female who completed the five day-long Non-Technical Survey Course on 9 October 2015.

The training course was designed and implemented to enhance the capacity of Libyans involved in humanitarian mine action and emergency response to assess the dangers posed by mines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) as a result of the ongoing armed conflict. The training was made possible by a generous contribution from the Government of Japan.

The training course focused on enhancing participants’ practical skills to effectively, accurately and safely implement a non-technical survey in the field. The non-technical survey is a crucial element to identifying areas contaminated by mines and ERWs.

The practical training course covered a variety of topics including how to use tools and a mapping and sketching exercise to capture the contaminated areas.

Participants identifyy and mark hazardous areas.

Participants learn a technique to identify positions accurately with a compass.
