UNSMIL Condemns the Escalating Fighting, Affirms its Ceasefire Efforts Continue

Tripoli, 21 August 2014 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemns the continuing fighting in Tripoli and Benghazi, especially the indiscriminate shelling of residential neighbourhoods and public facilities as well as the use of aircraft in military operations.

The Mission reiterates its warning of the catastrophic consequences of the continued fighting on all levels, at a time Libya needs consensus in order to build the State of institutions based on the rule of law and address the problems that threaten its stability, national unity and the safety of its people.

The Mission will continue to assist the parties to reach a ceasefire as a prelude to the resumption of the political process, and emphasizes the responsibility of the legitimate institutions for the completion of the transitional phase in a spirit of national reconciliation.
