UNSMIL holds consultations on the implementation of the LPA security arrangements

The Senior Military Adviser for the UN Support Mission in Libya, General Paolo Serra, arrived in Tripoli to consult with the Presidency Council and the Ministries of Defence and Interior on the next steps required for the implementation of the interim security arrangements contained in the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA). General Serra discussed with his counterparts ways to consolidate the latest ceasefire concluded between armed groups in the Tripoli area, as well as their demobilization and integration.

"I encourage all security actors in Tripoli to speedily implement the recent ceasefire agreement that was facilitated by the Presidency Council and the Ministers of Defence and Interior", General Serra said. "Tripoli is the capital of all Libyans. The residents of Tripoli deserve to live in peace and security and free from fear and want."

General Serra underlined the need to swiftly activate army, police and Presidential Guard in the capital, stressing that these forces must operate under a joint unified command structure under civilian control and inclusive of all military and security actors in the country. General Serra encouraged the Libyan authorities to take further steps to demobilize armed groups and integrate their members into state structures or the private sector, as laid out in the LPA.
