UNSMIL Statement on al-Foqha Attack

Tripoli, 29 October 2018 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) strongly condemns the deadly attack on al-Foqha, a town in central Libya, in what local authorities say was a brutal act of revenge conducted by ISIL. The Sunday attack resulted in four civilians killed – two of whom were executed in public, and at least nine abducted.

The Mission extends its condolences to the families of the victims and calls for the immediate release of the kidnapped and their safe return to their families. It reminds the parties to the conflict of their obligation to protect civilians and calls upon them to immediately cease targeting civilians and civilian objects in compliance with International Humanitarian Law.

UNSMIL is deeply concerned about the increasingly fragile security situation in central Libya and calls on Libyans to set their differences aside and cooperate to defeat the terrorist threat imperiling the stability and security of their country.
