UNSMIL Welcomes Public Circulation of CDA’s Preliminary Work

24 December 2014 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomes today’s announcement by the Constitutional Drafting Assembly (CDA) to release its thematic committees’ preliminary work for public discussion and feedback. Working under difficult conditions, the CDA has demonstrated its determination to produce a constitutional text that reflects the aspirations of all Libyans, and its recognition of the importance of public participation. While many are understandably eager to see a final constitutional text as soon as possible, the Mission is encouraged by the CDA’s careful deliberation, and its continued progress within a practical and realistic timeframe.

UNSMIL calls upon all Libyans to safeguard the independence of the CDA and to take advantage of this opportunity to participate in the constitutional process through constructive debate and dialogue. Now is the time to come together and find common ground on the complex and difficult issues that the constitution must address in order to build a strong foundation for Libya’s future.

From the beginning, this constitutional process has been designed, organized, and led by Libyans. The United Nations reiterates its commitment to continue providing support and assistance to the process, at the CDA’s request.
