To assist the Libyan authorities, UNSMIL has specialized personnel with expertise in mine action and clearance of explosive remnants of war, ammunition and weapons management, risk education, and data management. With support from the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), UNSMIL provides coordination assistance, prioritizes clearance tasks, helps mobilize resources, and liaises with the appropriate authorities and the international community in Libya to successfully implement clearance operations.

UNSMIL has progressively strengthened its efforts to assist Libya in reducing the threat of proliferation of small arms, light weapons and ammunition. In addition to the deployment of experts, UNSMIL support the development of a national weapons registration database. Field work has included liaison with some local and military councils to design and construct field storage facilities to consolidate and secure ammunition and weapons held by revolutionary brigades, and conducting basic ammunition handling and management training. Assistance has been provided to the Libyan Navy for the safe recovery and movement of naval weapons. Additional projects are being identified with military commanders around the regions.

At the request of Libyan authorities, UNSMIL is supporting efforts to establish a national arms and ammunition management committee to improve coordination and decision-making between different government ministries and agencies, and to ensure consistent application of standards across government agencies, adequate resource mobilization, and the development of an overarching national arms and ammunitions control framework and strategy.

UNSMIL is assisting the Libyan authorities at the local and national level to secure weapons and counter the illicit proliferation of arms. UNSMIL continues to facilitate visits by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which led to the verification of chemical caseloads and advice on their disposal. UNSMIL also provides logistic support to the International Atomic Energy Agency when required. UNSMIL has convened a coordination group on nuclear material, chemical weapons and other non-conventional arms including man-portable surface-to-air missiles. This group brings key bilateral partners together with the Libyan Ministries of Defence, Interior and Foreign Affairs, Nuclear Energy Establishment and Office for Chemical Weapons.
