SRSG Martin Kobler Welcomes LNA Qanfouda Announcement, affirms that Civilians must be Protected during Evacuation Process

10 December 2016 - The Special Representative to the Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, welcomes the announcement of a temporary cessation of hostilities by the Libyan National Army to allow civilians evacuation

‘I call on parties to the conflict in Ganfouda area to ensure smooth and safe evacuation process during the ceasefire period. Civilians must always be protected and should not be subjected to any form of harassment or maltreatment during this process,” said Martin Kobler.

The Special Representatives reminds all parties of their obligations in accordance with the 
International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law to ensure the safety and the dignity of the Civilians trapped in Ganfouda. 

Kobler has repeatedly expressed his deep concerns over the fate of trapped civilians in Qanfouda area in the city of Benghazi and has urged for their safe evacuation.
