Libyan Women Organizations Present Demands to Constitution-Drafting Assembly

Representatives of Libyan women organizations and activists met on Thursday 18 December 2014 in the City of Al-Baida with the Chairman of the Constitution-Drafting Assembly (CDA), Dr. Ali Tarhouni, and members of the CDA committees to present the demands for women rights and more general, constitutional rights that they hope it will be included in the draft constitution.

These demands were formulated during a workshop held in Cairo 1-4 November 2014 in which was facilitated and organized by the Women’s Empowerment Section (WES) of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN WOMEN). The visit to Al-Baida was a follow up action agreed to at the workshop in Cairo to deliver the demands to the CDA.

UNSMIL’s Women’s Empowerment Section will continue to provide technical assistance to women’s organizations during the constitution-making process, and will support their efforts to make their voices heard to achieve their desired demands.
