Martin Kobler reiterates full support to the Libyan Political Agreement and its institutions, warns against seeking to achieve political gains by force

The Special Representative of the Secretary General for Libya and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, reiterates his full support to the Libyan Political Agreement and its institutions and warns Libyan actors against seeking to achieve political gains by force. UNSMIL is following with concern reports on the formation of parallel military forces under the name of ‘National Guard’ and their deployment in Tripoli and the surrounding areas.

“Attempts to create parallel bodies and obstruct the implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) will generate further disorder and insecurity,” the Special Representative affirmed.  “I call for a united Libyan army, operating under civilian control and with a clear chain of command, that provides security for all Libyans, in the East, West and South. I call for the speedy activation of police and security forces to protect Libyans from crime and lawlessness,” he added.

Martin Kobler expresses his full support to the Presidency Council as the legitimate executive authority in Libya and calls for renewed efforts towards the implementation of the LPA. “I call for a reinvigorated political dialogue, based on the principles of inclusivity and accord, as well as serious efforts of national reconciliation,” he added.
