Note to Correspondents from the Spokesperson of the United Nations Support mission in Libya on the Joint Drafting Committee Meetings

Tunis, 29 September 2017 - The Joint Drafting Committee of the House of Representative and the High Council of State held its fourth meeting today, at the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s Tunisia headquarter in the presence of the Special Representative to the Secretary-General for Libya, Ghassan Salame. The meeting discussed ideas and suggestions presented by both councils regarding the composition, structure and responsibilities of the Presidency Council  and the cabinet as well as the selection mechanism for members of the Presidency Council.

The Joint Drafting Committee members affirmed that the purpose for these discussion is the drafting of amendments to the Libyan Political Agreement and not recommending or nominating names for any position in the Libyan state, including members of the Presidency Council.

The discussions were characterized by openness and objectivity.  There was a noticeable convergence of views among the Committee members, who expressed their determination to tackle all obstacles and reach consensus in order to move forward towards a state of institutions to which all Libyan aspire.
