Note to Correspondents from UNSMIL’s Spokesperson on the Second Round of the Joint Drafting Committee Meetings

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ghassan Salamé, met with the Dialogue Committees of the House of Representative and High Council of State tasked with drafting amendments to the Political Agreement. He congratulated them on the safe return after extensive consultations with their colleagues and wished them success in reaching understandings that would move the political process out of the current impasse.

The Special Representative stressed that he hopes that the Drafting Committee reaches within the next few days a transparent mechanism to ensure the formation of a reduced Presidency Council that embodies the unity of the country and a government that is objectively mindful of addressing the difficult living conditions of the people, unifying the public institutions and preparing the country for presidential, legislative and municipal free and fair elections within one year from now.
