Press Statement from the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya,on the Situation in the South

Tripoli, 26 January 2014 – The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Mr. Georg Charpentier, has expressed his concern about the effects of the clashes in the South which have led to the displacement of hundreds of families mainly within the Sabha area. Displaced families have been hosted by local communities which has added additional burden to households and medical services in the region.

As a result of the clashes, the South is suffering from shortages of food supplies, medicine, fuel, and money in the banks. Hospitals in Sabha, Awbari and Murzuk have been challenged to treat all casualties. "Some relief assistance is being provided mainly by local and central authorities with support from the UN Agencies and other national and international humanitarian partners. This includes non-food items, food supplies, and medicines for hospitals; more is being prepared to be delivered in the next 48 hours accompanied by a UN team who will meet with representatives of the population, listen to their grievances and support the ongoing humanitarian efforts" said Mr. Charpentier.

The Humanitarian Coordinator appeals to all sides to end violence and guarantee the protection of civilians. He calls on all parties to allow for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian support and ensure that assistance is provided in an equitable manner.
