Special Envoy Kubiš accompanies Foreign Ministers of Germany, France and Italy in official meetings in Tripoli

TRIPOLI, 26 March 2021 - The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ján Kubiš accompanied ministers of foreign affairs of Germany, Mr. Heiko Maas; of France, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian; and of Italy, Mr. Luigi Di Maio during their historic visit to Tripoli yesterday. Mr. Kubiš joined the meetings with Prime Minister Abdelhamid AlDabaiba and Foreign Minister Ms. Najla Almangoush as well as the briefing presented by the leadership of the High National Elections Commission on their preparedness for the elections.

The Special Envoy stressed the importance of the support of the international community to the Libyan people as well as to the new leadership to be able to carry out their duties including the preparations for the holding of the national elections on 24 December.

Mr. Kubiš stated that “Such a visit is a strong signal of a unified European position to support Libya in moving towards peace, stability, democracy, unity, and sovereignty.”
