UNMSIL Team Visits Tobruk Prison, 26 January 2017

UNSMIL’s corrections team visited Tobruk prison on 26 January 2017. Colonel Mohammed Saleh, the Director of the Green Mountain branch of the Judicial Police, accompanied the mission, along with Major Joma’ah Juad, the director of Tobruk’s prison. Both explained that the prison currently holds around 70 criminals. 95% of the inmates are pre-trial detainees with an average detention period of 3-4 months.

During the visit, the prison officials raised the challenges they are facing, due to the decaying infrastructure. UNSMIL noted the need to address these challenges, in order to ensure the safety of inmates. UNSMIL will continue to engage closely with national counterparts across the country to provide advice on improving the prison conditions.
