Tripoli, 27 November 2013 - Mr. Tarik Mitri, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations met on Tuesday 26 November with Mr. Nuri Abbar, the Chairman of the High National Elections Commission.

The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the Chairman of HNEC discussed the HNEC-UN cooperation on electoral matters, and shared views on the latest developments concerning the main electoral operations for the Constitutional Drafting Assembly (CDA) and the decision of the General National Congress to hold Popular Consultations concomitantly with CDA elections.

The two officials discussed the electoral and political calendar ahead, comprising the CDA elections, the Constitutional Referendum and a new round of elections after the adoption of the new Constitution.

Background

With the adoption by the Security Council of the resolution 2040 in March 2012, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) received a mandate to extend support to Libyan institutions during the transition period.

A team of UN electoral experts provided technical advice on the establishment and operation of the High National Elections Commission, including during the July 2012 General National Council elections.
